UL Lafayette to award honorary doctorate to alum James Garland

An internationally renowned designer of water features will receive an honorary doctorate of arts from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during Spring 2021 Commencement ceremonies.
James A. âJimâ Garland, an expert in water design, architecture and urbanism, founded Fluidity Design Consultants Inc., a Los Angeles-based water feature design and engineering firm. He earned a bachelorâs degree in architecture from the University in 1982. He also graduated from UCLAâs Master of Architecture degree program.
UL Lafayette will award Garland an honorary doctorate Friday during the College of the Artsâ Commencement. The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. at the Cajundome Convention Center.

Projected to be drafted in the fourth round, the San Francisco 49ers managed to land Western Michigan tackle Jaylon Moore with their first fifth-round pick of the day.
Moore was a two-time Second-Team All-Mac selection. Starting 32 of 37 career games, Moore has allowed just seven sacks over 1,056 pass blocking snaps during his time with the Broncos. In 2020, he played all six games and allowed just three sacks on 173 pass blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. He also blocked for a Western Michigan offense that ranked fourth in the MAC in yards per game (479.7). Read More >

NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s political reputation has been in a state of recovery, and impetus for the turnaround seems to be coming from the places she called home.
Here’s how newfound affection for the state’s 54th governor, who died in August 2019, is revealing itself: Her hometown of New Iberia is planning a 3:30 p.m. May 12 unveiling of a state marker honoring her at Bouligny Plaza, 128 W. Main St. Gov. John Bel Edwards, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, family members and state and local officials have been invited. The public is invited, too; an invitation-only reception will follow.
