Julia Letlow was sworn in to Congress Wednesday morning, a seat her husband was elected to prior to his death. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a ceremonial swearing-in for Julia, who won a special election last month to fill the seat vacated by her husband Luke, who was elected last year but died of complications relating to COVID-19 before he could take office. Julia Letlow a native of Monroe, is a mother to two and an administrator at the University of Louisiana Monroe, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech communication.The 5th District extends from northeast Louisiana into the state’s central region and into portions of Tangipahoa and Washington

Second install of Herons on the Bayou art lands in Ouachita Parish

Herons project is building connections Julia Sweeney decided to paint a heron after her students at Sterlington High School pointed out that she d developed it as a lesson plan for them, but she had not painted her own yet. During the fall election season, she quickly designed a patriotic bird with freehanded stars and stripes. The family of Matthew Cameron had the option to choose a heron to honor his memory from donated funds, and they chose Sweeney s design. Cameron was a founding member of Downtown Monroe Renaissance. The director of strategy and business development for CenturyLink also served in numerous leadership roles at local nonprofits and in state leadership.

#GlobalWarhawks – ULM celebrates International Week April 12-16

  The University of Louisiana Monroe’s International Week 2021 is set for April 12-16. The event features the Holi & Henna Festival of Colors from 4-5:20 p.m. Tuesday, April 13 at Bayou Park. Siddarth Gaulee/ULM Photo Services   Published April 9, 2021 A favorite tradition at the University of Louisiana Monroe is the celebration of International Week, sponsored by the Office of International Student Services and International Students Association.   International Week  2021 is Monday, April 12-Friday, April 16. Modified because of COVID-19 restrictions, the spring celebration will not include the popular food festival and international gala. Plans are to host those events in the Fall 2021 semester.

Herons on the Bayou will unveil Wave 2 on Saturday

Herons on the Bayou will unveil ‘Wave 2’ on Saturday ULM Office of Marketing and Communications The event is 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Bayou Park at ULM.  “Herons on the Bayou is in its second round, and the success of the project has been overwhelming,” said Foy. “We will have 87 herons in our community and will have raised money for the arts as well. The Herons have become a beautiful artistic addition to our visual landscape.”  Three ULM students have painted herons for Wave 2, which will be on display, Kristen Batten, Lonesha Tyson and Celina Walters. Foy said several ULM alumni are part of the project.
