CHARLOTTE, N.C. The return to campus may come with a COVID-19 vaccine requirement as a growing number of colleges and universities announced students and staff will need to provide proof of vaccination this fall.
“We’re just looking at it from a purely practical perspective of what it means to be safe and whole and respectful in community,” Lester McCorn, president of Clinton College in Rock Hill, said.

For the first time in too many months, cheers of PURPLE! and GOLD! rang through Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Friday as East Carolina University celebrated the accomplishments of more than 4,200 graduates during a series of spring commencement ceremonies.
In his first commencement as chancellor, Dr. Philip Rogers welcomed students from the Class of 2021 as well as the Class of 2020, whose graduates had online ceremonies last May and December due to the coronavirus pandemic. Three in-person commencement ceremonies on Friday allowed for social distancing with fewer people in the stadium for each event.

East Carolina University announced University of North Carolina System (UNC) President Peter Hans as its keynote speaker for the Spring 2021 Commencement on May 7, alongside additional details for the three ceremonies.
In a press release on April 15, ECU News Services said Hans will deliver the keynote address to about 4,000 spring graduates. The press release said there will be two ceremonies, one at at 9 a.m. and a second at 1 p.m., for undergraduate students and a 5 p.m. ceremony for graduate and professional students.
Hans served as the ninth president of the North Carolina Community College System prior to his election as UNC System president in 2020, the press release said. The release said Hans served as a senior policy advisor to three United States senators and counseled a private sector on public affairs at one of the largest law firms in the state.
