Washington, July 22 : The life expectancy at birth in the US declined by 1.5 years to 77.3 in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, the lowest level since 2003 and the largest one-year drop since World War II, according to government data issued on Wednesday.
Covid-19 deaths contributed to about 74 per cent of the decline in life expectancy among the general US population, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s National Center for Health Statistics found.
Another 11 per cent of the decline can be attributed to increases in deaths from accidents or unintentional injuries, including drug overdose deaths, the Xinhua news agency reported.
