According to an August 2020 article by ProPublica, an independent newsroom that produces investigative journalism, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reported 28 lab incidents involving genetically engineered organisms to safety officials at the National Institutes of Health between January 2015 and June 2020. “Six of the incidents involved various types of lab-created coronaviruses,” ProPublica said in the article. “Many were engineered to allow the study of the virus in mice.”
