SALISBURYÂ â Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will once again honor graduates with a drive-thru commencement ceremony at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The event is scheduled for today, May 21, and will follow the same socially distanced format as the collegeâs December 2020 graduation ceremony.
Graduates will, quite literally, cross the finish line on the speedwayâs track beginning at 10 a.m.
âWe continue to make it our priority to keep our students, faculty and staff as safe as possible while celebrating the remarkable achievements of our graduates under the challenging conditions presented by COVID-19,â said Dr. Carol S. Spalding, president of Rowan-Cabarrus. âOur December graduation on the track was an experience to remember, and we know that this ceremony also will create memories for a lifetime.â

Faculty members of a North Carolina university want an explanation for the school s reported decision to back away from offering a tenured teaching position to journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, whose work on the countryâs history of slavery has drawn the ire of conservatives.
Hannah-Jones was offered a position as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the school announced last month. Hannah-Jones is an investigative journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize for her work on The 1619 Project for The New York Times Magazine.
But the school changed its offer from a tenured position to a five-year term as a professor with an option for review at the end of that time, as first reported by NC Policy Watch on Wednesday.
