Timken, Acton join ranks of political amateurs considering higher office

COLUMBUS – The last political amateur to win a U.S. Senate race in Ohio boasted an impressive resume: He was the first American to orbit the Earth.  Even as a popular astronaut and Marine, Democrat John Glenn didn t win the first primary he entered – or the second. As he mulled a bid in 1964, Glenn faced criticism from those who said he wasn t qualified for higher office or shouldn t damage his brand with politics. As political newcomers Dr. Amy Acton and ex-Ohio Republican leader Jane Timken consider U.S. Senate bids, they will face some of the same hurdles Glenn did: a lack of elected experience and untested campaign acumen.

This same concept can also be applied to objects and extended beyond the environment and climate to include cultural, social, and economic factors.

Questions remain about Big Food s influence on the new dietary guidelines

This story first appeared on Civil Eats. When the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Agriculture (USDA), released new Dietary Guidelines for Americans on Dec. 29, 2020, they looked almost identical to the ones released five years earlier. There were new guidelines related to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and children under two, but to those who d been paying attention to the process, what stood out was what had not changed. Most glaringly, the guidelines failed to take up key recommendations from the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the group of experts responsible for preparing a detailed report intended to inform the final guidelines. This year, that document was 835 pages long and included recommendations for lowering the amount of recommended daily sugar from 10% of one s daily calories to 6%, as well as limiting alcohol consumption to one drink a day for both men and women.

National Humanities Center Book Club Series: John McGowan & Pragmatist Politics - UNC English & Comparative Literature

John McGowan   7:00 pm EST   John McGowan (Fellow, 2017–18), John W. and Anna H. Hanes Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill   Host: Marlene Daut (Fellow, 2016–17), Professor and Associate Director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies, University of Virginia In Pragmatist Politics, John McGowan suggests that perhaps the best response to the cynicism and despair that permeate contemporary American politics is a return to pragmatism. Offering an expansive vision of what the United States should be, McGowan combines the thinking of philosophers like John Dewey and William James with the ethos of comedy to imagine what American life could be like if we more fully embraced values such as love, forgiveness, and generosity that are too often left out of our political discourse.
