The packaging solutions provider plans employ up to 101 workers by 2025 at its new site in Hickory. Bardstown, KY-based American Fuji Seal is part of Japan’s Fuji Seal International and also maintains locations in Indiana and Mexico.

With the U.S. Supreme Court shutting the door this month on future legal action, a state Supreme Court decision will continue to dictate the University of North Carolina’s compliance with public records requests linked to sexual assaults. Now is a good time to review the issue. Membership on the N.C. Supreme Court has changed since justices split, 4-3, on the topic last spring. The dispute dates back more than four years. In September 2016, media organizations including the student-run Daily Tar Heel issued a request to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The media wanted copies of records of all students found responsible through campus agencies for rape, sexual assault, or other related misconduct. Within a month, the university denied the request.

Other top awards go to investigations that uncovered how deeply race and income determine causes of death in Massachusetts and how qualified immunity impacts excessive force cases against police. “In this difficult year, journalists and news organizations stepped up to fill the void of important information for the public,” said Sarah Cohen, a contest judge and the Knight Chair in Data Journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. “In the tradition of Philip Meyer, they created data and analyzed information using social science methods to help the public understand the pandemic, racial justice and other key issues.”
