UNEMPLOYMENT CHANGES EYED: The Senate Appropriations Committee will take up a wide range of bills, including a measure (SB 1948), filed by Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, that would require upgrading the state unemployment compensation system. Dina Santos is only 19, but she s already lived a long life.
At age 12, with her parents in the throes of addiction, she started taking care of her four younger sisters. Eventually she and her older brother, who had left home, reported the family’s situation to authorities and she and her siblings were put into foster care.
Now she is a student at Florida State College at Jacksonville with law school aspirations. And she attributes her life s current upswing to ongoing support from Family Support Services of North Florida Inc., the lead agency for family preservation, foster care, adoption and extended foster care in Duval and Nassau counties.
