COMMENTARY | A little over one year ago, and just weeks before COVID-19 gripped worldwide attention, two Florida state agencies agreed to a remarkable, consequential but barely noticed settlement to a class-action lawsuit that had accused them of illegally kicking eligible people off the state’s Medicaid coverage.
That settlement, enforced by a Jacksonville-based federal judge, included a requirement that the Florida Department of Children and Families and Florida Agency for Health Care Administration go back and review more than 71,000 cases across the state in which the agencies booted people, some of whom have severe disabilities or illness, out of their health care coverage without adequate notice or without a proper eligibility review conducted by state officials.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars today named
Dan Edwards, an original Jaguars executive who has exclusively led the Jaguars communications department throughout the existence of the franchise, to a new role as Senior Vice President of Jacksonville Tradition and Alumni.
Edwards, who prior to today held the title of Senior Vice President of Communications, is a 27-year veteran of the Jaguars who arrived in Jacksonville in 1994, shortly after the NFL granted the city an expansion franchise in late 1993. In his new position, Edwards will focus on building alliances, programs, brands and more that will illuminate and market the history, alumni and colorful moments of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
For 17-year-old high school senior Brenyya Connor, dozens of college acceptance letters have poured in since the Florida native first began applying to colleges last summer.
One by one, in her interview with Atlanta Black Star, the soon-to-be first-generation college student rattled off the names of schools that have offered her admission.
“I got into FAMU, Howard, Clark Atlanta, North Carolina, Iowa State, University of Iowa, North Carolina Central University, Alabama A&M University,” shared Connor, who currently attends Miami Northwestern Senior High School in Miami.
After submitting over 50 college applications, the ambitious student now has her pick of more than 50 colleges and universities to attend. It’s a list that includes: “…Alabama State University, Columbus State University, University of South Florida, University of North Florida, and I recently got into Clemson. I also got into Claflin University,” she said.
