Brazil hits 7m Covid-19 cases with infections picking up speed

SAO PAOLO (BLOOMBERG) - Brazil reached 7 million coronavirus cases as infections pick up pace just ahead of the holiday season. The government reported a record 70,574 new cases Wednesday (Dec 16), taking the total to 7,040,608. The milestone comes less than a month after Brazil hit the 6 million mark. The Latin American nation trails only the US in number of cases and is third in the world in Covid-19 deaths, with 183,735. The data show we are going through an acute phase of new Covid cases, disseminated across Brazil, said Domingos Alves, a professor of medicine who s part of the Covid-19 Brasil monitoring group.

Even with the less accurate (see at end) Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 1.8% according to John Hopkins (December 12, 2020), the US has a lower CFR rate than 79 other countries . Including Vietnam which was trumpeted as a model of containment. As well as countries such as Sweden, France, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Ireland, Italy, United Kingdom, Tanzania, etc. And based upon https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us and using round numbers, then 314,000 confirmed Covid-assigned deaths and 17,000,000 confirmed cases leaves us with a CFR of 1.85. Yet there are fact checker pages denying that the recovery rate in the US for Covid is 98% even though they use the case fatality rate.

6 Min Read (Reuters) - Wisconsin’s governor on Friday extended a statewide mask mandate despite a legal challenge from conservatives, renewing an emergency health order requiring face coverings in public spaces to curb an alarming surge in COVID-19 infections. The new decree from Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, came six months after a coronavirus stay-at-home order issued last spring was invalidated by the state Supreme Court in a lawsuit that Republican lawmakers brought against the lockdown. The same court heard oral arguments on Monday in a similar lawsuit brought by a prominent Wisconsin conservative donor contesting Evers’ authority to impose an earlier face-covering mandate, which is due to expire on Saturday.
