New history trust forms – set to take on Winchester HOD

WINCHESTER Heritage Open Days will now be the responsibility of a new charitable incorporated organisation. Hampshire History Trust is set to take the reins, starting this year, as well as create a new festival based in the city. This new CIO will also run other community projects such as a Blue Plaque Scheme and Hampshire HistBites, the county’s history podcast channel. Nicky Gottlieb and Becky Brown, two of the three founding trustees, said they were delighted that the new charity had been approved by the Charity Commission. “​This is the start of an exciting journey for us,” said Nicky.

Alan Titchmarsh opposes against Alresford solar farm plans

TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh has joined the tide of opposition to a solar farm north of Alresford. Objections, and latterly expressions of support, have been pouring into the city council office over plans for land off Godsfield Lane, Armsworth. There have been around 685 objections and 175 supports. Mr Titchmarsh is Chancellor of the Winchester University, a senior honorary role. And among the supporters of the scheme, according to the council, is Prof Joy Carter, vice chancellor of the university. Alan Titchmarsh has written in opposition to plans for a solar farm north of Alresford. Mr Titchmarsh, of Holybourne, near Alton, wrote to the council: “A totally inappropriate site for this scale of solar power installation. More often than not, a long period of chaos is endured before order is regained. More than 1,500 years ago Hampshire was in a similar situation, as the Romans left and Saxons took their place. The first coherent snapshot of the organisation of the country is the Domesday Book. It was compiled nearly 700 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire and a generation after the Norman Conquest. It shows a county divided into ‘hundreds’, with some names that make little sense to modern eyes.
