Using massive amounts of data from hundreds of soybean farmers, a field crop researcher has developed some recommendations to increase production.
Shawn Conley, a University of Wisconsin agronomist, laid out his findings in a Dec. 15 Penn State soybean production webinar.
In 2018, Conley and 14 co-authors issued a report on yield data collected through confidential farmer reports and detailed follow-up observations by university undergrads. Data were collected for the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons.
Farmers in the study contributed detailed data sheets on a total of 8,000 separate fields. Conley got the lowdown: location, planting date, variety, tillage method, pest damage, fertilizer and seed treatment use.
