Magdalena Frennhoff Larsén is teaching EU studies at the University of Westminster. Her PhD, which she obtained from the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster, analysed EU-South Africa trade negotiations following South Africa s transition to democracy. She did her undergraduate studies in political science at the University of Lund, Sweden, and for her Master of Social Science she studied for a year at the University of Bologna and a year at the University of California, Irvine. Prior to joining the University of Westminster, Dr Frennhoff Larsén worked as Development Director at the Institute for Citizenship and as Public Affairs Officer at the UK Office of the European Parliament.

When we come across false information on social media, it is only natural to feel the need to call it out or argue with it. But my research suggests this might do more harm than good. It might seem counterintuitive, but the best way to react to fake news – and reduce its impact – may be to do nothing at all.

Rohingya refugees detained on remote island The Bangladeshi authorities relocated more than 1,600 Rohingya refugees to Bhashan Char, a remote silt island at the Bay of Bengal, on 4 December 2020. Despite the fact that it has not yet been declared safe for human habitation by the United Nations, about 100,000 Rohingya refugees could be taken from Cox’s Bazar to the remote island. With grave concerns for the safety of thousands of Rohingya refugees, Amnesty international is calling on the Bangladeshi authorities to immediately halt the relocation of more people to Bhashan Char, return those already on the island to their families and community in Cox’s Bazar and follow the due process, including full and meaningful participation of refugees, for any relocation.  TAKE ACTION
