An Alabama man is dead and another is in police custody after a shooting on Interstate 71 on Thursday morning, officials said.
Boone County Sheriff s Department Lt. Philip Ridgell said a driver, 32-year-old Tommy Hightower, of Jasper, Alabama, called 911 just after 8:30 a.m. to report the shooting.
Dispatchers directed Hightower to pull off the highway at the Vernona exit and into a gas station.
Investigators discovered Hightower had shot his passenger, 36-year-old Girlis Serratt, also of Jasper, Alabama, as they were traveling southbound on the highway, Ridgell said.
