SCRANTON, Pa. The University of Scranton s flag flew at half-staff Friday afternoon as the campus community mourns the loss of its president Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J. He was an icon in the university, and he did so much for the students here. I mean, he was a big part of what made me choose the school. He made me always feel welcome when I was here, said sophomore Nathan Tauber.
Rev. Scott Pilarz, who spent two years as Marquette University s president, died March 10 due to complications with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig s disease or ALS. He was 61.
In his short time at Marquette, Pilarz oversaw the development of the university s strategic plan, which serves as the basis of the university s current plan for the future. He also guided Marquette into a newly reconfigured Big East conference.
In a statement Thursday, Marquette President Michael Lovell expressed his condolences to Pilarz s friends and family.
“Father Pilarz brought Marquette’s mission to life as a passionate educator, thoughtful leader and devoted man of faith,” Lovell said. “His legacy extends through the many lives he touched and through the invaluable groundwork he laid to establish our strategic plan, which will continue to guide the university into its bright future for years to come. He was a true servant leader in the Marquette community.
Scranton President Dies of ALS Complications

The Reverend Scott Pilarz, president of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, died this week of complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, at the age of 61.
Father Pilarz announced his diagnosis in 2018. He had been slated to step down May 31, according to the Wilkes-Barre
Times Leader.
He was both the 24th and 27th president of the university, first serving from 2003 to 2011. He then returned to the position in 2018.
The university announced Father Pilarz had died Wednesday in a letter from the chair of its Board of Trustees, James M. Slattery.
“Anyone who spent time with Father Pilarz experienced his humor, compassion and genuine humanity,” Slattery wrote. “He was a person for others in every sense, devoted to a life of service that exemplifies what it means to be a Jesuit and a priest.”
