Electric City Connection project s mission two-fold | Business

Like most restaurants, Abe’s Kosher Delicatessen in Scranton took a hit when it had to shut down its dining room and shift to takeout and deliveries at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Owner Renato Luongo found some help through a collaboration from Scranton Tomorrow, the University of Scranton and Friends of the Poor meant to assist the struggling industry while combating food insecurity. From March through October, the Electric City Connection project raised more than $47,000 — including $20,000 from the Scranton Area Community Foundation — to purchase local restaurant gift cards and meals for people in need. Now, they’re asking for donations again. Food insecurity is growing and restaurants continue to lose revenue while operating under pandemic restrictions, especially after Gov. Tom Wolf halted indoor dining again until Jan. 4.

The salary is $53,300, which the city and the city school district split because the office collects real-estate and other taxes for both. Opsasnick actually worked in the office as an auditor and later tax administrator for 37 years before retiring three years ago. Restaurants get a boost from their customers

Local organizations, businesses and entrepreneurs around the region are stepping up again to help struggling restaurants at the end of an already difficult year for the industry in Pennsylvania. “I love this area so much and I just hate to see people struggling, and I know restaurants specifically have been impacted,” said photographer Autumn Granza, who planned a fundraiser on Saturday to help restaurants. On Dec. 12, Gov. Tom Wolf restricted indoor dining in restaurants across the state until Jan. 4 to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Restaurants in Lackawanna County have not been allowed to reopen at full capacity since March 19, when a statewide shutdown of nonessential businesses began. Outdoor dining has been and is still allowed at eateries, many of which were operating at 50% capacity for indoor dining until last week.
