Growing up in lockdown: young people give their perspectives

Throughout the pandemic, decisions made by adults have had a significant impact on all aspects of young people’s lives, yet some teenagers feel their voice and experiences during the pandemic have not been heard. The political has become personal for many, leading some young people to become increasingly engaged with politics and involved in community action. Research undertaken by my colleagues and I at the University of Huddersfield and consultancy Ecorys, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, has been exploring young people’s experiences during lockdown, including their engagement and involvement with politics. The research project, Growing up under COVID, involves 70 young people aged 14-18 in the UK, Italy, Lebanon and Singapore.

Generating Evidence to Support Front-Line Care

Jan 13 2021 Read 187 Times Responding to the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19, Dr Syed Shahzad Hasan, senior research fellow in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Huddersfield, in collaboration with colleagues at the University and from around the world have, since March, published over 50 articles on various aspects to dealing with the pandemic, including the safe use of medications.   “Our research team was among the first to synthesise the evidence on the use of proton pump inhibitors (1) and statins in COVID-19 patients(2),” said Dr Hasan. “These were the first to report on the safety and effectiveness of these medications in COVID-19 and were widely covered by the leading medical news outlets,” (at the time). “The idea was to generate evidence and share with a range of front-line healthcare professionals like clinicians who needed help with the evidence-based information to deal with the medical emergency. We provided them with up-to-date evidence-

Solar Panels Begin Carbon Reduction Scheme on Campus | Off Grid Energy Independence

External Company Press Release Over 500 solar panels are being installed on the roof of one of the University of Huddersfield s largest buildings as part of a major carbon reduction scheme across the institution, in response to the climate emergency. The work is part of the University s 10 Point Plan towards achieving Carbon Neutral status for Scope 1 and 2 by 2030. Scope 1 emissions are those from sources directly owned or controlled by the University, while Scope 2 are those generated by use of energy bought from a utility provider.   The photovoltaic (PV) panels will be positioned on top of the Technology Building, the first phase of a planned investment of £1m in measures to reduce carbon emissions on the campus. The Plan was developed in conjunction with staff and students, and adopted by the University s Council in 2020. For further information see the IDTechEx report on Energy Harvesting Microwatt to Gigawatt: Opportunities 2020-2040.
