Our solar system’s first known interstellar visitor is neither a comet nor asteroid as first suspected and looks nothing like a cigar. A new study says the mystery object is likely a remnant of a Pluto-like world and shaped like a cookie. Arizona State University astronomers reported this week that the strange 45-metre object that appears to be made of frozen nitrogen, just like the surface of Pluto and Neptune s largest moon Triton. The unique object, named Oumuamua, was thought to be highly elongated, about 400 metres long and coloured dark red. It is the first space rock from outside the solar system ever obs(PA/AAP)

Oumuamua was first discovered on October 19, 2017, by the University of Hawaii’s Pan-STARRS1 telescope, funded by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations (NEOO) Program. The cigar shaped rock was recorded to be travelling at blistering speeds of 196,000 mph (87.3 kmps) and was originally classified as a comet or an asteroid.
