A new field hospital in Toronto is getting ready to start accepting transferred patients this week.
As the mobile unit at Sunnybrook Hospital prepares to open, hundreds of patients in just the past two weeks have reportedly been transferred from hot spot hospitals to other parts of the province to free up desperately needed beds.
GTA hospitals now overflowing with COVID patients have transferred over 550 patients to other areas of the province.
Fortin said quality assurance backlogs, not production issues, have led to delays of about a week to 10 days for Moderna shipments. Four million more doses of that vaccine are expected by the end of May and deliveries are to come every two weeks instead of three. We re fully aware the provinces are making adjustments and we re trying to narrow this down as much as possible so that they don t find themselves in situations where they have to constantly react to perceived delays, Fortin said Thursday.
Ontario reported a new high of 4,736 new COVID-19 infections Thursday, along with 659 patients in intensive care and 29 more deaths. Associate chief medical officer Dr. Barbara Yaffe called the situation dire.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says federal health-care workers will be sent to Ontario to help manage the worsening COVID-19 crisis.
Trudeau says in a video update that workers from departments such as National Defence and Immigration will be reassigned to help in the Greater Toronto Area in particular.
He says he’s also working with provinces such as Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island to see what human resources and equipment they can spare.
“We are mobilizing federal health-care workers from across government departments to deploy to the front lines in Ontario, specifically to the (Toronto area) where the situation is most critical,” Trudeau said.
