Lessons learned during our year with COVID-19

We’ve just been through a year-plus in dealing with a global pandemic. Many of our actions and reactions were laudable: The toughness of our frontline workers, our own adaptability and community-minded actions, and countless, personal brave and selfless acts. But we stumbled as well, and in some instances and with some strategies we wished we had a do-over.
We’ve asked several people in the Capital Region to look back over the past year, and to also look forward. If, heaven help us, another pandemic takes hold in the near future, with what we know now, how might we react differently. What are some of the lessons we have learned?

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. That number is expected to climb to 13 million over the next 30 years as our population ages. Death from Alzheimer’s and other dementias climbed 16% in this country during the pandemic. But the experience of white and Black Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease is different and that affects care and treatment. Dr. Julia Hastings is an associate professor at the University at Albany School of Public Health and School Social Welfare. She recently had a grant funded, looking at the burdens experienced by teens in the home of a loved one with Alzheimer’s as well as their care-giving parents. Also here is Beth Smith Boivin, executive director of the Alzheimer s Association Northeastern New York chapter.
