One of London’s biggest hospitals has warned it is on track to become virtually Covid-only amid a surge in cases in the capital that has left it scrambling to convert operating theatres, surgical recovery areas and stroke wards into intensive care units for the very sick.
As the daily coronavirus case numbers in the UK continued an apparently inexorable rise, hitting a record 55,892, with 23,813 people in hospital and 964 reported deaths, the chief executive of University College London hospitals trust (UCLH), Prof Marcel Levi, said admissions were already spiralling beyond the first wave in the spring.

Interesting but not surprising.calls for no one to receive 2nd dose wasn t there? Still effective without but not as effective? Also.suspect logistics are now playing a part as well as the number of Covid cases rapidly increasing?
The trials weren t done on this type of schedule though. When it s been mentioned a number of experts are against it as the first dose might only provide very limited protection below the required efficacy rate. For Pfizer the efficacy after the first dose was at most 52%.

Neil Stone, a consultant at the University College London Hospitals Trust, tweeted: A very happy Christmas to everyone and especially all the #NHS workers - in particular our fantastic ID team (including Dr Michael Marks and Professor Chris Whitty) who will be on the wards so the rest of us can have a bit of time off! Next year will be better!
Professor Whitty was also said to have been spotted hard at work on the festive weekend by another source, The Independent reports.
The face of Professor Whitty has become familiar to many over the last year due to his presentations of Public Health data during Downing Street s coronavirus press conferences.
