COVID-19 Surge Reported in I V Over Holiday Weekend as SB County Tops Highest Spread in California

January 17, 2021 at 7:13 pm by Katherine Swartz Over 70 new COVID-19 cases have been reported this weekend in Isla Vista, a surge corresponding to a sharp increase in cases across Santa Barbara County, which now has the highest COVID-19 spread of any county in California.  A group of residents gathered on Del Playa Drive in October. Max Abrams / Daily Nexus Fifty-one new COVID-19 cases were reported in I.V. on Saturday through UC Santa Barbara Student Health alone, according to an email sent to students Saturday afternoon from Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Margaret Klawunn and Student Health Executive Director and University Physician Vejas Skripkus. This, combined with an additional 22 cases reported on Friday, brings this weekend’s total to 73.

Students elected the fourth-year political science and environmental studies double major to be the third Associated Students (A.S.) president of the 2020-21 school year, A.S. Elections Board announced Thursday evening in a live webinar.  Toubian won with 53.83% of the vote, while Carlos “Andy” Ruiz, a fourth-year sociology major running against Toubian, received 46.17%.

Max Abrams / Daily Nexus Though the window to change grading options is officially over, the goal of the Academic Senate’s extension was “to provide an additional option for students who were experiencing unexpected additional stress … due to the worsening of the pandemic locally and across the country,” according to Mary Gauvain, Academic Senate chair.
