Pictures: SARAH CALDECOTT FIVE years ago this week, the top ten purrfect picture entries for The Northern Echo’s Christmas Pawtraits competition had been selected by celebrity judges, Ashleigh and Pudsey. The stars of stage and screen took time out their busy schedule thrilling audiences with pantomime performances of Cinderella at Darlington’s Civic Theatre to visit the newspaper’s offices. More than 100 entries from across the North-East and North Yorkshire were judged by the duo with ten-year-old Pudsey, at the time, sniffing out his festive favourites.

Annfield Plain crash: Motorcyclist taken to hospital with multiple injuries

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, on Tuesday. A Durham Police spokesperson said: A motorcycle, a KTM off-road motorbike, was being driven along West Road at 5.10pm on the evening of Tuesday, December 15 when it was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen Golf, which was turning into Hamsterley Gardens. A man in his mid-20s was thrown from the motorcycle and was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for treatment to a fractured pelvis, fractured wrist and elbow and fractured vertebrae. The driver of the car, a man in his early 40s, was uninjured.

The Yorkshire Ripper s ashes were sent to his brother by special delivery before they were passed on to two superfans to scatter at secret locations. Peter Sutcliffe s body was cremated in secret and his remains given to his brother Mick Sutcliffe by the funeral director friend in a box. The 74-year-old died in hospital last month after contracting Covid-19 following a heart attack, and reportedly refusing treatment. The serial killer s brother said he did not feel anything, after receiving the ashes last Friday.  Mick Sutcliffe, 70, divided the ashes into two piles and sent them to a male superfan, in Newcastle and a female supporter.
