Rachel L Giesey, DO, on the Global Disease Burden of Psoriasis

email article Psoriasis continues to be the second largest contributor to skin-related disability globally, and its prevalence continues to increase. This chronic, disfiguring disease can have a significant negative impact on quality of life, especially in patients with a low socioeconomic status. In its 2016 Global Report on Psoriasis, the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that psoriasis is estimated to affect at least 100 million adults and children worldwide, and that many people suffer needlessly due to missed or delayed diagnosis, poor access to care, inadequate treatment, and social stigmatization. To better understand the global incidence, prevalence, and disease burden associated with psoriasis, investigators analyzed trends from 1990 to 2017 in 195 countries using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). The authors found a positive linear relationship between the prevalence of psoriasis and associated comorbidities incl

New formulation of existing medicines prove highly effective against drug-resistant fungus

Credit: CWRU CLEVELAND A team of researchers from Case Western Reserve University has discovered a formulation of existing medicines that can significantly reduce the presence of the fungus Candida auris ( C. auris) on skin, controlling its spread and potentially keeping it from forming infections that have a high mortality rate. By using a proprietary formulation of topical medications terbinafine or clotrimazole, researchers prevented the growth and spread of the fungus on the skin of a host; the findings appear in the most recent issue of the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. It s a very difficult fungus to kill because it is highly resistant and opportunistic generally taking hold in those whose immune systems are already battling other threats, said Mahmoud Ghannoum, who led the research as director of the Center for Medical Mycology at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. It s promising that we w

GE s Stock Price Largely Reflects Our Positive Outlook

We have greater confidence in General Electric’s (GE) path to recovery, and the company’s deleveraging efforts have progressed further than we initially expected. However, the bear case continues to cast doubt over the industrial conglomerate’s future. We think GE has appreciable value that bears fail to acknowledge. We’ve concluded that GE Aviation is worth far more than bears give it credit for, mostly because we believe they underestimate the contribution from narrow-body aftermarket sales. GE Healthcare has outperformed analyst expectations during the pandemic, and we think its expertise in the diagnostic imaging markets positions it to address some of the industry’s most pressing challenges and promote continued growth and margin expansion even after the sale of GE Biopharma.
