BRIGHTON TWP. Santa and Mrs. Claus didn t let COVID-19 stop them from spreading cheer this year to frontline workers families.
Heritage Valley Health System hosted its annual Breakfast With Santa this weekend with a twist. Rather than sitting down one-on-one with about 600 children and grandchildren of hospital employees, the Clauses passed out holiday kits as part of a drive-thru Breakfast With Santa program.
“Although we are apart, we remain uniquely connected, said Laurie Clemens, vice president and chief human resources officer at Heritage Valley. This year, we offered an at-home edition of Breakfast With Santa for our employees and their children/grandchildren in place of our in-person event.
Beaver County s hospital system received a second variety of vaccine for COVID-19 Monday.
Heritage Valley Health System received 2,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine Monday, in addition to the 1,950 doses of the Pfizer vaccine distributed to the health system last week.
The health system administered first doses of the two-part vaccine to 600 frontline workers as of Monday, with plans to administer doses to another 500 workers before Christmas.
Under plans outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the vaccine is being distributed to frontline healthcare workers first.
The Moderna vaccine, developed by a Massachusetts-based biotechnology company, was authorized by the FDA Friday and began distribution on Monday. Unlike the Pfizer vaccine, Moderna s product does not need to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures. Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said that will allow the Moderna vaccine to be distributed more widely.
Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrives at local hospitals
UPMC Jameson and Passavant received the vaccine Thursday and began inoculating priority hospital staff by Friday.
Heritage Valley Health System also received doses of the vaccine for its frontline workers at the Beaver and Sewickley locations. According to a press release, 975 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine were received Thursday.
Heritage Valley has developed an automated tool that allows individuals to schedule their first and follow-up dose and copy the appointments to their calendars. This automated seamless process allows individuals to schedule their own appointments at their convenience and will also enable the health system to perform all of the required reporting associated with the COVID-19 vaccine process, Norm Mitry, president and CEO of the Heritage Valley Health System, said in a release.
