Many schools begin the New Year online

Many public school classrooms in Glendale will be closed to start 2021, as most districts are in online-only mode after a post-Thanksgiving spike in COVID-19 cases in communities. But Peoria Unified School District classrooms at Glendale and Peoria high schools and elementary schools will be open Jan. 4. The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board voted to keep classrooms open after winter break “regardless of benchmark data.” Guidance from the county indicates PUSD, with two consecutive weeks of “substantial” data as of Dec. 24, has a recommended learning scenario of “virtual with onsite support.” Maricopa County spokesman Ron Coleman noted the guidelines are flexible.

Sounding off: Lucerne Valley students share thoughts on COVID-19

By Peter Day Special to the Victorville Daily Press Like most students nationwide and beyond, Lucerne Valley Elementary School students’ 2020 school year turned topsy-turvy when the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe last spring. Lucerne Valley Unified School District administrators were hopeful the 2019-20 school year could get back on track, but state and county officials effectively nixed the idea as coronavirus infection numbers grew. During the summer, however, LVUSD officials worked on a reopening plan that included clear desk partitions in classrooms, outdoor hand-washing stations, hand sanitizer dispensers, upgraded air filters throughout campuses and touchless temperature scanners at school sites, among other upgrades.
