Much homelessness, but some hope following Sunridge fire in Avon

Eagle River Fire Protection District/Special to the Daily Axel Lloyd and Kaylie Kierstead held their housewarming party on April 9. The couple had closed on their Avon condo on March 22 and were excited about getting past one of the snags to success in Eagle County obtaining a place to call their own. Two days after the housewarming party, Lloyd and Kierstead were living out of a hotel room. A fire devastated the Sunridge apartment complex on April 11. “It felt like we had just done the major hurdle that prohibits so many other like-minded folks from making a life here in the valley, we had just overcome that hurdle,” Lloyd said. “And then (the fire) happened, so it’s kind of bitterly ironic.”

(KOLD News 13) - The National Park Service began accepting applications for noncommercial river trip permits to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park on Monday, Feb. 1. The permits are for specific launch dates within calendar year 2022. A total of 246 permits will be available for 12- to 25-day river trips. Eligible individuals may apply online at the weighted lottery website. Applications will be accepted online through noon Mountain Standard Time on Feb. 23.

He is believed to have fallen about 80 feet and died.  Credit: Lisa Carter According to a spokesperson for the park, there isn t currently any ice or snow in the area where Carter fell.
