Michigan health officials wrestle with who gets COVID-19 vaccine next

As early doses of COVID-19 vaccines arrive in Michigan, there’s no dispute over who’s first in line: front-line hospital workers and medical first responders who have battled the virus for months. Next up, according to state plans: staff and the mostly elderly residents of long-term facilities that account for more than a third of the state’s overall coronavirus death total, which has surpassed 11,000.   This story was co-published with Bridge Magazine. But with initial doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine still scarce, county health departments and local hospitals are faced with difficult choices on how to prioritize vaccines after these top-level groups.  

Graduation Rates of Students at State-Operated Historically Black Universities : The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education

A few of the nation’s private historically Black colleges and universities have achieved progress in graduating their Black students. For example, Spelman College in Atlanta has a Black student graduation rate of 75 percent. Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Hampton University in Virginia have graduation rates of 60 percent or better. But at most of the nation’s state-operated historically Black colleges and universities, the graduation rates remain very low. JBHE has compiled a listing of Black student graduation rates at a large group of the state-operated historically Black universities. The graduation rate is determined by determining what percentage of students who enter a particular institution received their bachelor’s degree within six years at the same university.

A look back at the lost semester of school in Michigan Updated Dec 20, 2020; Facebook Share This year has been a challenge, to say the least, and schools aren’t exempt from the long list of normalcies people across the state have lost in an effort to stop a spreading pandemic. In the nine months since students were first sent home from school and classroom doors were closed due to COVID-19, parents and their children, school administrators and teachers have been faced with the issues that come with a virtual school year – from poor internet connection to the unintended consequences of the lockdown on students’ mental health.
