These Are the 100 Best Public High Schools in America

These Are the 100 Best Public High Schools in America  By Lexi Pandell, Stacker News On 1/27/21 at 8:00 PM EST As filmmaker and writer Nora Ephron said during a 96 commencement address at Wellesley College, Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead. If that s the case, high school may be one of the greatest dress rehearsals of all. It s a place where students explore their interests, dive into extracurricular activities, finally get the freedom to choose their own classes, and prepare for college or the workplace. For many of these students and their families, public education is key: 56.4 million students enrolled in public elementary and secondary schools in 2020; and there are almost 24,000 public high schools in the U.S., according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Students protest San Dieguito s reopening plan

On Dec. 17, a group of San Dieguito Union High School District students protested for a safer reopening of their schools, sending a message that they want their voices heard and to ensure that their teachers are protected. The students held signs that read: “Keep us safe,” “We stand with our teachers”, “If you don’t act like adults we will” and “You can’t put kids first if you put teachers last.” The protest was prompted by the board’s decision on Dec. 15 to expand the reopening of schools to five days a week on Jan. 27 and due to board member Michael Allman questioning the value of student input as they determine reopening plans.
