The best day trips from Salt Lake City

The best day trips from Salt Lake City Lonely Planet Editors 9 March 2021 It s no wonder that Salt Lake City has exploded in popularity in recent years – it s nearly as synonymous with outdoor recreation as it is with the Mormon faith. With its close proximity to the unique sodium chloride formations to the east, the Wasatch Mountains to the west, and countless hiking, biking, skiing, and even spelunking opportunities within two hours drive, it s no wonder the SLC metro is growing.  From herds of wild bison to sprawling sculptures that fit right into Utah s epic landscapes to family-friendly old west history to ski towns that offer thrills and frills, there s a little something for everyone. And the best part of all is that you can fit each of those adventures into a quick there-and-back-again if you re short on time. We narrowed it down to the top ten day trips from Salt Lake City.

But if it s a relaxed trip you re after, don’t let that put you off. This silver boomtown-turned-skier’s-paradise has serious charm. Nestled in the craggy Wasatch Mountains of Western Utah, it’s the most accessible major ski destination in the United States, thanks to Salt Lake City International airport being only 40 minutes away. Every January, Park City is thrust into the spotlight when the glitzy Sundance Film Festival descends upon its snowy streets but the rest of the year this is a laid-back town.

Why Ski Patrollers Are Picketing at Two Vail Resorts

“NOT ON STRIKE JUST PRACTICING,” read the bold white letters on the red picket signs, some hoisted up with ski poles. On Saturday, a dozen off-duty ski patrollers from Stevens Pass ski resort stood outside city hall in downtown Leavenworth, Washington, the Bavarian-themed tourist town 40 minutes from the mountain. They waved these posters while passing out “I SUPPORT SKI PATROL” stickers and informational palm cards that read: “We need your help to pressure Vail Resorts to negotiate a contract with us and provide training, fair wages, a safe and healthy workplace, and respect for what we do.” Eight hundred miles away, eight of Utah’s Park City Mountain ski patrollers gathered on Lowell Avenue, by one of the resort’s main entrances, also handing out cards. “Our contract expired on November 14th,” their cards read. “We need adequate sick time, hazard duty / pandemic pay, guest and worker health safety, and respect for professional ski patrollers.
