Two days in Tulsa: Revelations and reflections on the 1921 race massacre

Burnings, bombings, bodies and the destruction of “Black Wall Street” the Greenwood District of Tulsa 100 years ago continue to haunt survivors and younger generations who now are breaking the culture of silence that has long surrounded the event. Here, ASU professors recount their personal and academic experiences with the Oklahoma massacre.

The new normal

A look at recent graduates in a mostly remote world Editor s note: This story originally appeared in the summer 2021 issue of ASU Thrive magazine. It has been more than a year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. In a matter of days, many businesses, schools and other organizations were forced to take operations remote to slow the virus’s spread. ASU students had to connect with their professors through webcams, halt their extracurricular activities and, for the graduating Class of 2020, hold a virtual commencement ceremony. Despite the challenges, graduates made the most of their situations. We checked in with the Class of 2020 to see how they have adapted to working in such a unique environment with some not having set foot into their offices or met their new colleagues in person. What we’ve found is that this resilient class has been able to apply their skills with agility and grace.

Managing global climate change--and local conditions--key to coral reefs survival

E-Mail Australian researchers recently reported a sharp decline in the abundance of coral along the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists are seeing similar declines in coral colonies throughout the world, including reefs off of Hawaii, the Florida Keys and in the Indo-Pacific region. The widespread decline is fueled in part by climate-driven heat waves that are warming the world s oceans and leading to what s known as coral bleaching, the breakdown of the mutually beneficial relationship between corals and resident algae. But other factors are contributing to the decline of coral reefs, as well, including pollution and overfishing. According to a new study, Local conditions magnify coral loss after marine heatwaves, published in the journal

Magda Hinojosa named director of ASU s School of Politics and Global Studies

Kevin Vora As a master’s degree student in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, Vora joined KER to gain more experience in data analytics. He found that and more. “I actually feel myself putting the skills to the right use and bringing some impact here,” he said. “I am able to publish my results, and our researchers put them to the right use.” In his position as data analytics research aide, Vora analyzed COVID-19 cases by geographic region and found they resembled a patchwork of outbreaks rather than a single uniform pandemic. He shared these results with decision-makers, helping them develop more informed policies and interventions.
