BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China. DESERT PLANTS Chinese researchers have revealed why Caragana species, a genus of flowering plants, are widely distributed in deserts, semideserts and loesses with great drought tolerance. Researchers at the School of Life Sciences, Lanzhou University have found that the leaves of Caragana species provide great efficiency and safety in hydraulic conductance, which allow them to grow and survive in arid and semiarid areas. IPR CENTER China has approved the establishment of an intellectual property rights (IPR) protection center in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the National Intellectual Property Administration said on Tuesday.

The 2015 publication of a gain-of-function study that details the creation of a chimeric virus certainly raises questions that need answers. However, the researchers made a stunning omission that becomes all the more alarming considering the goal of gain-of-function research.
Back in 2012, Dr. Anthony Fauci pushed for gain-of-function research, claiming it was worth the risk. These comments are part of a legitimate debate within the scientific community. The theory yet to be realized is that researchers can create close approximations of viruses that may emerge from nature through gain-of-function research. Then treatments can be developed, targeting likely genetic or protein targets on the chimeric virus.
There is a strong link between hormonal contraceptives and breast cancer risk. The main culprit are progestins, synthetic mimics of the pregnancy hormone.
Bern [Switzerland], May 29 (ANI): Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (also known as Ecole Polytechnique federale de Lausanne- EPFL) led a new study into the distinct biological effects of different progestins on the breast that found contraceptive-related breast cancer can be prevented by more informed choices about the composition of contraceptives.
