Philadelphia officials outlined the preparations for Wednesday s nor easter, which forecasters say could blanket parts of the city in upwards of 10 inches of snow between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Philly, the surround counties and parts of central New Jersey. In Philadelphia, the snow is expected to start around 3 p.m. Wednesday. It will become a wintery mix of snow and sleet Wednesday night and snowfall could continue into late Thursday morning, NWS meteorologists predict.

However, this year is different because of the pandemic. The School District of Philadelphia says that since classes are 100% digital, school will not be affected by the upcoming storm on Wednesday. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs, Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and Poconos from 7 a.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday as a powerful Nor’easter is set to impact the region. Confidence continues to increase that significant snowfall will occur across a large portion of the area. At least six inches of snow is possible along I-95 and areas west with totals of a foot or more possible.

School District of Philadelphia to host oratorical contest The School District of Philadelphia will be hosting the first annual oratorical contest, a public speaking competition in which competitors deliver an original speech on a particular topic. The contest is open to all high school students in the School District of Philadelphia. Using the theme “My Philadelphia, My Future” students are encouraged to explore how they envision being an authentic builder/contributor to the future of the City of Philadelphia. Participants has to create an original three-minute speech, poem, or spoken word piece. A point will be deducted for every 30 seconds over the three-minute limit. One submission will be allowed per student and offensive language will not be allowed. Students must complete the entry form in addition to submitting the video.

Cheltenham volunteer firefighter receives Act of Valor Award

PHILADELPHIA — A volunteer firefighter with the Cheltenham Fire Company was honored with the National Liberty Museum’s Act of Valor Award earlier this month for his work in the Philadelphia area amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was nice to be recognized by an organization like that,” said Fire Lt. Malik Willard, a 26-year firefighter with the Philadelphia Fire Department. Willard, 50, of Philadelphia, also committed to dedicate his time in early 2020 as a way to “give back a little to the volunteers,” at the Montgomery County agency. - Advertisement - After learning about the initiative earlier this summer, Willard said his friend and colleague Lt. Joseph Gardener nominated him for the award.
