“
Music is a powerful tool that can be used for good. We all need to play our part if the
planet is to survive.” The message of climate initiative ‘No Music On a Dead Planet’ rings out loud and clear. Nieve O’Donnell reflects on the project’s work to date and asks whether the music industry is doing enough to tackle the climate crisis.
The campaign ‘No Music On a Dead Planet’ brings together individuals and organisations within the music industry to declare a climate and ecological emergency. They’ve had a number of endorsements from music industry insiders such as Annie Mac and Arlo Parks by “using the advocacy power of artists to unite audiences in a clear call for action.” With the UK not currently on track to meet its 2050 net-zero target, the music industry is just one piece in a much larger puzzle – but is simply raising awareness enough?

It’s the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, and we can finally dare to celebrate. Yes, we have a climate change crisis on our hands. Yet the White House just announced the U.S. will cut greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030. Solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources will power us forward.

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg rebuked members of Congress on Thursday over how they ve handled the climate crisis.
Thunberg, 18, urged lawmakers to end fossil fuel subsidies and take more serious action to help keep the planet in reach of the global warming target of 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels the limit scientists have set for staving off the worst impacts of climate change.
Her testimony before the House s Oversight and Reform Committee s environment subcommittee coincided with Earth Day and the first day of President Joe Biden s virtual climate summit with dozens of world leaders. The goal of the summit, according to Biden climate envoy John Kerry, is to raise global ambition on mitigating the crisis.

STOPPED in their tracks by the pandemic, citizens around the world are once again bracing to mobilise for the planet in a year marked by several major international summits on climate and biodiversity.
In 2019, millions of people, led by student and youth organisations, flooded the world’s streets to demand that governments act to stave off the worst effects of global warming.
But then came Covid-19, bringing the global movement to a screeching halt, with lockdowns and travel restrictions forcing mass events to be cancelled and activism to shift online.
