Dr. Mark Gonyea is elated about the chance to open a new school and work with a team of dedicated educators and staff members to establish a culture to best serve students.
He’ll get the opportunity as the first principal of Plainview Elementary School, the newest Rutherford County school set to open in August 2021. Director of Schools Bill Spurlock made the hiring announcement today.
“Dr. Gonyea is a strong instructional leader and has the ability to build instructional capacity throughout his faculty,” Director Spurlock said. “He is the ideal administrator to launch our next school.”

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) â Rutherford County students will begin the second semester with in-person learning Mon., Jan. 11. Distance-learning students may continue doing so and any family who wishes to switch their children to distance-learning may still take that option by notifying their school.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) â Due to the increased number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Rutherford County, Assistant Superintendent Dr. James Sulivan announced that the district is considering a hybrid schedule for the second semester.
âSchool districts across Tennessee and the nation are struggling to find a way to safely continue instruction while also balancing the load on teachers and parents,â Director of Schools Bill Spurlock said in a press release. âWhile no solution is perfect, this proposal will help us to increase social distancing by reducing the number of students at school each day.â
