Wales four Police and Crime Commissioners have been elected.
The results were announced on Sunday afternoon as the last of the counting came to an end after Thursday s elections.
The border with England along its eastern flank makes independence a key issue with voters. Although split from top to bottom by the thunderous M74, the seat is overwhelmingly rural in character, with the main towns being Dumfries, Lockerbie, Annan, Langholm, Moffat and Sanquhar, and, of course, Gretna Green. From the flatlands of the Solway coast, it gets hillier as it roams north into the Southern Uplands and Eskdalemuir Forest. From the start of devolution until 2016 this seat and its predecessor were Labour-held. That changed at the last election when Oliver Mundell gained it for the Tories and Labour came third behind the SNP.
OVER the weekend, the First Minister gave a combative, confident and assured interview on The Andrew Marr Show. As always, the BBC presenter was more aggressive in his questioning of the vile Scottish separatist but still Nicola Sturgeon was easily the best interviewee on the programme. Admittedly she had been preceded by the Conservative Liz Truss so the bar hadn’t so much been set low as it had been buried more deeply than whatever it is that passes for moral probity in the Johnson administration. There are in fact fossils of some of the earliest life forms on Earth which aren’t buried as deep and just like the Scottish Conservatives, who refuse to call out the corruption and sleaze that envelops the government of Boris Johnson, they haven’t evolved a spine either.

The SNP Government will be remembered for “broken promises” rather than any positive changes in Scotland, Douglas Ross has said.
The Scottish Conservative leader cited pledges on education, health and council tax that he argued have not been met, suggesting that is what Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon’s legacy in government will be.
