O-Zone: Ready for his closeup

Luke from Brisbane, Australia    KOAGF, maybe my eyes deceive me, but the Jags didn t come across as your standard 1-15 team last season. Yes, there were some blowouts where they were simply overmatched, but also a lot of close games where a bit more experience/composure/execution at key periods could have seen them end up at least 6-10ish. With the cavalry arriving in the form of a top-shelf quarterback, a truckload of draft picks, cap space, coaching overhaul and a year s more experience for the young uns, is it blind optimism that has me thinking they could go above .500 and possibly top two in the division this year?

Josh from Atlanta, GA If they were both available this year, and all college statistics and analysis remained the same: Andrew Luck or Trevor Lawrence No. 1? If I were limited to what I knew about Luck and Lawrence after their college careers, I would probably select Luck. But that opinion is biased because I remember having a real feeling watching him at Stanford that he wouldn t miss. This was because I was impressed with Luck s ability to call games at the line of scrimmage and change plays when needed. I didn t have quite the same impression watching Lawrence at Clemson. But that in no way means he can t do it; all reports are that his football intelligence and study habits are impeccable, which leads you to believe he can mentally excel at the position. You also would be tempted to lean toward Luck in your scenario because he played in the NFL at a high level for an extended period, so he is a known quantity. While Lawrence is the most enticing prospect since Luck, he remain

Taylor from Columbia, MD Something that struck me about that Albert Breer interview with Jaguars Media last week was his assertion that Urban Meyer won t be pointing fingers at players, and that the emphasis will be on coaches developing players. He even went so far as to say that Urban believes NFL players are inherently good and it s on coaches to develop them. It seems like Urban believes that it s always coaching in the NFL, or at least it s far more important than you believe. Coaching matters very much in the NFL. It is particularly important for head coaches – and by extension, assistants – to set the tone and standard for an organization, and to ensure players understand that standard. When I say, it s always coaching in the NFL, I m usually talking about fans criticizing coaches for play-calling and fans who believe firing a defensive or offensive coordinator on a Monday will magically transform a team into greatness by the following Sunday.
