Matriculation students allegedly slapped with RM1,500 fines, Health DG says investigation ongoing

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah ( pic) said the Perak Health Department is looking into the matter. Thanks for the complaint made to the Health Ministry. Actions will be taken immediately, he said in reply to Twitter user @NabilAmirul4, who shared a picture of the incident on Monday (April 19). According to @NabilAmirul4, the students have been confined to their colleges for an entire semester due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The incident is believed to have occurred at the Perak Matriculation College in Gopeng. The post has been retweeted about 30,000 times. There was also plenty of furore on Twitter, with many users deeming the incident unfair.

Picture by Hari Anggara KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 The Perak Health Department has launched an immediate investigation into the recent fines meted out to several matriculation students in the state. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah thanked the public for alerting the ministry. “Action will be taken as quickly as possible, God willing,” he said on Twitter. 

Covid-19: Three fatalities bring death toll to 1,389

The ministry expresses its condolences to the family members, said Dr Noor Hisham. The two Malaysians were a 75-year-old man who died at Hospital Sarikei in Sarawak, and a 71-year-old man at Hospital Sungai Buloh, Selangor. Both had underlying conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and chronic kidney disease. The non-Malaysian was a 65-year-old woman who died at Hospital Tawau in Sabah. She did not have a history of comorbidities. Active cases continued to rise, with the country’s latest figures standing at 21,268. Currently, there are 249 patients under intensive care, with 95 of them requiring ventilator support. Another 1,592 patients have been discharged from treatment, which means 356,816 people in the country have recovered from Covid-19.

Dr Adham said his ministry had recommended that interstate travel to balik kampung when Muslims celebrate Hari Raya next month be postponed.
