COVID case cancels Island CupÂ
Vineyarders finish season 2-3.
The Island spring football season is over, not with a bang, but a whimper.
The much-awaited 41st annual Island Cup football game between Marthaâs Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) and Nantucket High School (NHS) was canceled Tuesday after a COVID-related quarantine following the Vineyarder game against Old Rochester Regional High School (ORR) last Saturday. An ORR offensive player tested positive early this week.
As a result, the entire Purple defense has been quarantined, according to COVID protocols, and MVRHS is unable to field a team â since many Vineyarder defenders also play major roles in the offense.
Purple fall to ORR, 30-12
Readying for Island Cup season finale, series tied at 20 wins apiece.
The gridders of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School now look for season redemption via the Holy Grail of the Island Cup after absorbing a disappointing loss to Old Rochester Regional High (ORR) Saturday at Dan McCarthy Field in Oak Bluffs.
Before taking on the Bulldogs, then 1-2 on the season, coach Don Herman said
“ORR has been a quality opponent for us for years in several sports, including football. It’s generally a tough game.“
It did begin as a tussle, with ORR taking a 7-6 first-half lead, after a gritty and successful Vineyarder goal line stand ro end the first half. Second half, not so much. ORR blew it wide open in the third quarter scoring four times on three TDs and a safety. Bulldog quarterback Ryyn Thomas had 3 TDs, two running and one passing.

Seven new covid cases were reported in the Old Rochester Regional School District on Jan. 14 and 15, bringing the district total up to 139 since its Sept. 16 reopening.
The 139-case total is a reflection of all the cases that have been contracted by members of the district since school reopened, not the number of active cases.
Two of the cases were found at Sippican School, and the other five were found in the Old Rochester Regional High School.
The positive individuals from Sippican School were last in the school building on Dec. 23, and the positive individuals from ORRHS were last in the school on Jan. 10, 11 and 12.
