WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) today commended a new report from the American Nuclear Society which provides analysis of current research and development (R&D) program funding levels inside the U.S. Department of Energy. The U.S. Nuclear R&D Imperative recommends significant immediate increases in federal nuclear R&D investment. Implementation of advanced nuclear technology and the modernization of current nuclear resources are essential to the deep decarbonization of the electric sector, said Dr. Rita Baranwal, Chief Nuclear Officer at EPRI. This report is a roadmap for how to prioritize and fund the R&D that will allow the nuclear sector to modernize and expand into the 2030s to play its part in achieving the nation s decarbonization goals.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) President and CEO Dr. Arshad Mansoor told energy regulators this month that the moment is here for hydrogen to take its place along the path toward economy-wide decarbonization.
In remarks to the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Winter Policy Summit, Mansoor said, We ve been talking about [hydrogen] for a long time. It s always 10 years away. Even 50 years ago, it was 10 years away.
But now, the media, investors and policymakers are paying more attention to the virtues of hydrogen and its ability to decarbonize the industrial and transportation sectors and to electrify hard-to-electrify sectors by creating an alternate molecule, Mansoor said.
EPRI, GTI’s Low-Carbon Resources Initiative Gains Another Sponsor, Surpasses $100M Funding Milestone
The Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI), a collaborative project from the Electric Power Research Institute Inc. (EPRI) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI), added its 33rd sponsor, achieving and exceeding its $100 million effort to develop alternatives to natural gas.
Utility holding company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and newest member, Xcel Energy joined the efforts of the LCRI to bring together industry stakeholders and accelerate the development of low- and zero-carbon energy solutions.
Under the LCRI, EPRI and GTI, accompanied by sponsors, hope to bring early-stage technologies to commercial scale by 2030. Independent and nonprofit organization EPRI previously committed $10 million to the multi-year project.
