The project, a megadam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, known as the Brahmaputra in India, was announced in November by the Power Construction Corporation of China, although it has not started yet.
Analysts in India have raised several red flags – they fear the project could trigger flash floods or create water scarcity. Security experts say a dam close to China’s heavily militarized border with India would give Beijing strategic leverage as differences between the two countries intensify over disputed borders in the Himalayan mountains.

VICTORIA FALLS: White water rafting activities that were likely to be suspended due to the construction of the Batoka Gorge Dam here received a lifeline following recommendations to confine the new dam wall to only 175 metres.
The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), a bi-national organisation equally owned by Zimbabwe and Zambia governments is spearheading construction of the 2 400MW Batoka Hydro Gorge Electric Scheme (BGHES) located 47km downstream from the spectacular Victoria Falls.
Currently ZRA is finalising preparatory activities for the implementation of the project.
There have been concerns by the companies engaged in white water rafting under the Rafting Association of Zimbabwe (RAZ) who feared the project would drive them out of business.

The move to finally take Akwa Ibom State away from being a core civil service state to an industrial super hub within the Gulf of Guinea last week got the nod of the federal government with the approval for the take off of the Ibom Deep Sea Port, a news that threw residents of the state into an ecstasy of delight.
The Ibom Deep Sea Port, a Public Private Partnership Initiative under a 60% private and 40% public sector arrangement will no doubt change not just the face of the state’s industrialization philosophy but also has the possibility of having a multiplier effect whose impact will surely boomerang to almost all sectors of the state’s economy.
