PATERSON The record numbers of shootings and homicides Paterson endured in 2020 came with an added blow: the city saw significant reductions in the percentages of those crimes that were solved.
Paterson s clearance rate the rate at which crimes are solved for homicides fell from 58% in 2019 to 30% last year, while the percentage of non-fatal shootings solved dropped from 47 to 30, according to data provided by the city.
City officials attributed the decline in clearance rates to the COVID-19 pandemic and the public backlash after George Floyd’s death, factors that they said undermined critical investigative techniques and necessities, like door-to-door neighborhood canvassing and community willingness to cooperate with cops.

Mayor Andre Sayegh on Saturday confirmed Tuminelli’s unpaid suspension from his $33,873 city job.
