Compliance, punishment and restriction : Commission uncovers culture of abuse in Australian gymnastics

Share on Twitter The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has recommended major reform in the sport of gymnastics after an independent review uncovered an abusive and a “win-at-all-costs” culture that creates “unacceptable risks” for the safety and wellbeing of young women and girls. These findings detailed negative coaching behaviours that create a risk of harm or abuse to athletes, body shaming practices that can cause long-term eating disorders, a silencing of the athlete voice and a failure to adequately address complaints of abuse and harm. The commission engaged with Gymnastics Australia in August 2020 to conduct the review following repeated claims of abuse in the sport. It interviewed 57 members of Australia’s gymnastics community and heard 138 written submissions.

Former Political Staffer Brittany Higgins Seeks Reform From Leaders

Former Political Staffer Brittany Higgins Seeks Reform From Leaders Higgins met with the prime minister and Labor leader Anthony Albanese in Sydney on April 30.  A decision by Higgins to go public about her alleged rape in a ministerial office at Parliament House sparked national rallies about the mistreatment of women and an independent review into parliamentary workplaces. She told reporters after the meeting with Morrison he had acknowledged the system let her down. “It was a difficult conversation, it was robust, but ultimately, in the end, I think there was a consensus that reform needs to happen,” she said. The talks centred on reform of the Members of Parliament Staff (MOPS) Act, which Higgins says does not offer adequate workplace protections and conditions for staffers.
