Two brown Himalayan bears neglected at a Pakistani zoo arrived on Thursday in Jordan after US music icon Cher took up the cause of an Asian elephant at the same zoo.
Their plight has shed light on the intricate diplomacy involved in animal welfare and the star power that can make rescues possible. Pakistani authorities are sensitive to suggestions that animals in their custody were being mistreated.
Female bear Suzie and her companion Bubloo were offloaded from a Qatari passenger plane into the cargo terminal of Amman airport. They arrived in white cages and had a shell shocked appearance after the one stop flight from Pakistan.
Khan Pledges Pakistani Help Toward Afghan Ceasefire: Sediqqi
President Ashraf Ghani spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday evening and they discussed the peace process and their concerns over the escalation of violence in Afghanistan, Presidential Palace spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.
Prime Minister Imran Khan told President Ghani that Pakistan will help Afghanistan bring down the level of violence, leading to ceasefire, said Sediqqi.
Islamabad in a statement said that Khan had a phone call with Ghani to discuss the progress in the ongoing Afghan peace process and the strengthening of Pakistan-Afghanistan relations.
Khan reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process for a political solution to the conflict in Afghanistan, it said.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban s co-founder who spent eight years in Pakistani custody, led a delegation that arrived in the capital, Islamabad, on a three-day visit on Wednesday morning.

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) Numerous energy projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) are playing a pivotal role in promoting Pakistan s renewable energy goals and low-carbon economy, a Pakistani expert said.
CPEC is paving the way for Pakistan to achieve its ambitious target of increasing the share of renewable energy in power generation to 30 percent till 2030 from the current 4 percent, Muzaffar Ali, chairman of Energy Engineering Department of University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, told Xinhua. China has in recent years been investing Pakistan under CPEC in energy sector with special focus on producing non-polluting energy by utilizing clean resources including solar, wind and hydro, and the two countries are further strengthening their cooperation in renewable energy development, Ali said.
