LAHORE: While the dope test of eight Pakistan athletes participating in the forthcoming Olympics came negative, the first batch of the country’s Tokyo-bound contingent left for Japan on Thursday night.
According to a press release issued on Friday by the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), which also handed cheques of Rs100,000 to each athlete of the Pakistan contingent says that the dope test result of weightlifter Talha Talib was awaited as it was taken late on July 21 after the confirmation of his participation on quota system.
KARACHI: The President, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), retired Lt Gen Syed Arif Hasan has said that everyone in the country is keen to see Pakistan’s athletes perform well in the Tokyo Olympics, set to start from July 23, and added that he is confident of their fine show in the Games.
“Despite the Covid-19, these athletes have proven their capabilities at the Olympic qualifiers and surely, they will showcase the same sort of excellent performances at the Tokyo Olympics,” Arif said while talking to this correspondent.
“It has been almost three decades that Pakistan won an Olympic medal. The last occasion was in 1992 Games at Barcelona where the Pakistan hockey team, led by Shahbaz Ahmed, had won a bronze medal,” he recalled. “We hope for a good news this year at the Tokyo Olympics and we are keen to see out athletes excel at the mega event.”
Najma determined to produce her best at Tokyo Games

KARACHI: This will be the second time on the trot when Pakistan’s experienced athlete Najma Parveen will feature in the Olympics on wild card. She will appear in the 200 metre race in the Tokyo Games on August 2 at the Olympic Stadium.
The Army’s athlete has been phenomenal in her approach and has been winning national titles since 2010 in a number of events, a huge achievement from the Faisalabad runner.
After having featured in the 2016 Rio Olympics on the basis of wild card, Najma’s success graph started rising. She set records in the 2019 National Games in Peshawar and carried the form into the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal in December 2019 where she snared a 400m hurdles gold, two silver medals and a bronze.

LAHORE: The 14th edition of the South Asian Games (SAG) will be held in Pakistan’s cities of Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Islamabad in 2023. The 14th South Asian Games had originally been expected to take place in 2021 but the coronavirus pandemic has delayed those plans. Pakistan has hosted the event twice before in Islamabad in 2004 and 1989. Nepal’s cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara staged the last South Asian Games, 13th edition, in 2019. A virtual meeting of the South Asian Olympic Council (SAOC), regarding the 14th SAG, was held on Tuesday. The meeting was hosted by the National Olympic Committee Pakistan under the Chairmanship of Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hasan, who is also President of the SAOC and President of the Pakistan Olympic Association. The meeting was held in a virtual mode due to travel restrictions. The Council’s meeting was attended by the Presidents and Secretaries General of the SAOC countries to discuss various matters
