Riaz Ahmed asks PM to play a key role in solving long-standing problems of handloom carpet industry

LAHORE: Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) has said that country’s export sectors are facing more difficulties and they should be given priority, especially the carpet sector.
PCMEA Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmed told the media on Sunday that he had written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan for solving carpet sector’s problems to increase its exports. He said that the prime minister was making every effort to increase exports. “We want him to play a key role in solving the long-standing problems of the handloom carpet industry.”
Pakistan’s Finance Minister (FM) Shaukat Tarin has said agriculture, industries, IT and Service sectors will be incentivised in the next budget to enhance their productivity.

The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) has sent a six-point letter to the Ministry of Commerce, appealing for instant remedial measures to save the carpet industry suffering due to lack of trade incentives as well as pandemic-related economic contraction.
In the letter, PCMEA Senior Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmad stated that at least 50% compensation subsidy should be given by the government against high air and sea freight rates. He sought participation in international exhibitions with association contribution and government subsidy at a ratio of 50:50 instead of the 80:20 ratio which was approved by the ministry, but had not been implemented to date.

The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMAEA) has asked the government to provide all possible support to the export sector in the current difficult situation and has sought relief in the upcoming budget for 2021-22.
Speaking at a meeting, PCMAEA Senior Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmed said that other countries, including traditional rivals, were earning revenue from the export of handmade carpets and the government should take notice and issue directives for giving a boost to the carpet industry.
Meeting participants discussed the difficulties faced by the handloom carpet industry and related artisans. The association official said that keeping in view the situation created by the pandemic, the government should provide facilities and incentives to the export sector.
