Pakistan to block social media app TikTok over indecency complaint

3 Min Read ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan on Thursday blocked the popular social media app TikTok after a court order over a complaint that it ran indecent content, a spokesman for the country’s telecoms regulator said. “The court has asked PTA to block access to TikTok,” Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) spokesman Khurram Mehran told Reuters, adding that the authority would comply with the order. A high court in the northwestern city of Peshawar said it ordered the ban after a private complainant said the social media app was spreading indecent content, said Jehanzeb Mehsud, a lawyer who represented the PTA.

A Pakistan court on Thursday ordered Pakistan Telecom Authority to ban TikTok for "spreading obscenity".   "The court has asked PTA to block access to TikTok," Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) spokesman Khurram Mehran told news agency Reuters. He added that the telecom authority would comply with the order given by Peshawar High Court. During the hearing, Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan said that videos that are being uploaded on TikTok are "unacceptable for Pakistani society".

• Allows import of cotton from Afghanistan, Central Asian Republics • Commission for oil companies, dealers increased • Two Punjab-based fertiliser plants to get subsidised gas ISLAMABAD: The government on Wednesday increased commission for oil companies and their dealers on sale of petroleum products, allowed import of cotton from Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics through Torkham border and approved Rs7.8 billion worth of Ramazan package for Utility Stores. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee of the cabinet presided over by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh. The ECC also allowed provision of subsidised natural gas to two Punjab-based fertiliser plants Fatima and Agritech for nine months with additional subsidy of Rs2bn to Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.
