More recently, though, there appears to have been a move further away from the U.S.-led sphere of influence and towards the China-led one. This was partly due to the three-year freeze in diplomatic relations with key U.S. allies Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt based on accusations that Qatar supports terrorism and partly due to the practical consideration that Qatar shares its most important hydrocarbons resource with Iran – the 9,700 square kilometre supergiant non-associated natural gas field that on Qatar’s side is the North Dome and on Iran’s side is South Pars. Qatar Petroleum enters LNG supply deal with Pakistan DOHA, March 1, 2021 Qatar Petroleum has entered into a new long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Pakistan State Oil Company Limited (PSO) for the supply of up to 3 million tons per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan. Under the 10-year agreement, LNG deliveries to Pakistan’s world-class receiving terminals will commence in 2022 and continue until the end of 2031. The SPA was signed in Islamabad by Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, and Syed Taha, the Managing Director & CEO of PSO in a special ceremony held under the patronage and with attendance of Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, senior Pakistani government officials and Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Ambassador to Pakistan.
