Last summer, shoe and accessory designer George Sully launched the Black Designers of Canada, a first-of-its-kind interactive index and platform for Black creatives. It’s a tool to increase the visibility of Black-owned brands in Canada, who continue to face barriers when it comes to breaking into the industry, reaching profitability or even being featured in fashion media. The BDoC is a collaborative platform designers and brands can be nominated on social media or through the BDoC website. A few weeks into launching, the index had more than 100 brands, from accessory labels to children’s wear, industrial design and even interiors. Today it has 180.

It’s been more than three weeks since elder Carolyn King from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation was appointed to the Order of Canada.
“I’m a bit overwhelmed that someone thought to nominate me at that level,” she said in an interview on the weekend.

King, 71, said she was “pleasantly surprised” to find out about her appointment to the order, one of the nation’s highest honours that, since 1967, has added more than 7,000 names. Appointments are announced by the governor general.
